Amid fierce competition and an electrifying atmosphere, the riders of Barrileras, Inc. stood out not only for their skill but for the unique challenge they undertook: riding unfamiliar horses. With little time to bond with their mounts, the riders displayed an exceptional ability to adapt and compete under pressure.
From the moment they arrived, the Barrileras, Inc. team was a whirlwind of activity, quickly immersing themselves in the rigorous training schedule and bonding with their new equine partners. These rented horses, with diverse temperaments and backgrounds, posed a formidable challenge. However, the riders’ unwavering determination and passion for barrel racing turned the challenge into an exciting journey of discovery and triumph.
Each race day was charged with anticipation. Spectators watched in awe as the Puerto Rican riders navigated the barrels with precision and style. Their performances were a testament to their skill and the hours of intense training. With every turn and gallop, they captivated the audience, leaving an indelible mark on the championship.
The highlight of the event came when several riders from Barrileras, Inc. advanced to the finals, their fast and fluid movements drawing cheers from the crowd. These young athletes, Isabella Criado from Rincón and Xiorimar Meléndez from Fajardo, embodied the essence of international competition, seizing the opportunity the NBHA provides to excel on the world stage. Xiorimar Meléndez achieved 4th place in the Third Division of the finals.
“The experience of competing in the NBHA Youth and Teen World Championship has been nothing short of thrilling,” said Keyri Matta, President of Barrileras, Inc. “Riding a rented horse is a unique challenge, and the Barrileras have proven they have the courage and skill to take on and triumph in that challenge. It’s been an unforgettable journey. Thanks to Patricia Sanders, our NBHA Liaison Director, for planning our trip and connecting us with Allison Lunsford, Director of NBHA Georgia, NBHA champion, and barrel horse trainer, we were able to get quality horses and a one-of-a-kind experience. The Barrileras did the rest, and I couldn’t be more proud of them and the collective efforts of the parents. We’ve come so far in such a short time.”
Barrileras, Inc.’s journey to Perry, GA, and their remarkable performances are a testament to the organization’s mission to promote barrel racing and gymkhana events on a global scale. With participants as young as 5 years old, the association has grown rapidly, fostering a community where passion for the sport and mutual support flourish.
A heartfelt thank you to Allison Lunsford and her team at Caney Creek Farm for providing us with quality horses. Their generosity and support were crucial to our success in the championship.
